Tasty upma prepared using Kodo Millet Rava
About Kodo Millet
Kodo is very rich in dietary fibre and protein in addition to all the general millet characteristics (gluten-free, low glycemic index, high fibre, etc). It has a high antioxidant content and it is highly beneficial for diabetes patients.
Kodo Millet is called as Haarka (in Kannada), Arikelu (in Telugu), Varagu (in Tamil) and Kodon (in Hindi)
- 1/2 cup Kodo Millet Rava
- 3 cups Water
- 1 nos Finely chopped Onions
- 2 nos Finely chopped Green Chilly
- 6-8 nos Curry Leaves
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Urad Dal Optional
- 2-3 tbps Oil/Ghee
- 1/4 cup Finely chopped Coriander Leaves
- Roast the Kodo millet Rava in low flame. Stir continuously for about 10 minutes. Once roasted, keep it aside.
- Cut all the vegetables.
- In hot Pan, heat Ghee/oil and add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds have popped, add Urad dal (optional) and Curry leaves. Add Green Chillies and onions and stir well. Fry till onion starts losing its color. Add Turmeric powder and stir well.
- Add water to this and let it boil. Add salt. You can adjust salt at this stage. When the water starts boiling, add the roasted rava. Continuously stir when adding the rava. Close the lid and let it cook in low flame for about 5 minutes.
- Stir well till the desired consistency of upma is reached. Garnish with Coriander leaves and serve hot.
