Tasty Little Millet Upma prepared using millet Rava.
About Little Millet
Little Millet is high in healthy fats in addition to all the general millet characteristics (gluten-free, low glycemic index, high fibre, etc). It also has the smallest grains, so cooks faster than the other millets.
Little Millet is also called Same (in Kannada), Samai (in Tamil), Samalu (in Telugu) and Kutki (in Hindi)
- 2 cups Little Millet Rava
- 6 cups Water Adjust based on consistency preference
- 1-2 nos Sliced Onion
- 2-3 nos Finely chopped Green Chilly
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 8-10 nos Curry Leaves
- 1/4 cups Peanuts/Cashew Based on preference
- 1/2 cup Chopped Tomatoes based on preference
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/4 cup Grated Dry Coconut (Copra) based on preference
- 2-3 tbsp Oil/Ghee Ghee gives great taste and aroma
- In a pan, heat oil/ghee. Add mustard seeds and let them pop. Once the mustard seeds have popped, add peanuts or cashew.
- Add curry leaves and green chillies and stir for a minute
- Add sliced onions. Fry till onions become transparent.
- Add turmeric powder and stir for about 30 seconds
- Add Little Millet Rava to this and roast the millet in low flame for about 15 minutes. Stir continuously and avoid burning the rava.
- Add grated dry coconut (copra) and stir for about 2 minutes.
- Add boiling water to the roasted rava. Add chopped tomatoes. Tomatoes can be added at the onion frying stage itself. My girls like tomatoes and prefer them this way. Add salt.
- Close the lid and leave it for about 10 minutes in low flame. Cook until the desired consistency is reached. Note: Upma becomes harder as it cools.
- Add coriander and serve hot.
