Little Millet Tomato Bhath is a tangy sweet delight!
About Little Millet
Little Millet is high in healthy fats in addition to all the general millet characteristics (gluten-free, low glycemic index, high fibre, etc). It also has the smallest grains, so cooks faster than the other millets.
Little Millet is also called Same (in Kannada), Samai (in Tamil), Samalu (in Telugu) and Kutki (in Hindi)

- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1-2 tbsp Sambar Powder I used MTR Sambar powder. Adjust quantity based on spice preference.
- 2 tbsp Oil/Ghee
- 1 tbsp Salt to taste
- Chop all vegetables and keep it ready
- Cook Little Millet Rice (2.5 measures of water for every measure of rice. In a pressure cooker, 1 whistle at high flame and 2 whistles in low flame (approx 10 mins). Remove from flame and dont open the lid let the rice cook in its own steam. In this preparation, I added Bay Leaf and Green Peas when cooking the rice. Bay Leaf gives nice fragrance to the rice.
- Heat oil/ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds are popped, add curry leaves, green chillies and chopped onions.
- When the onions are transparent add the Capsicum dices.
- When Capsicum starts to lose its color, add sambar powder and salt to taste. You can add red chilly powder if you need additional spicyness. Cook in low heat for couple of minutes. Make sure that you dont burn the masala.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook till tomatoes start giving out water. Stir the mixture continuously. If there is a need, add 1 to 2 tsps of water to loosen the mixture. You can also add 1 tsp sugar if you like the sweet-tangy flavor. In this preparation I have not added sugar.
- When tomatoes have disintegrated, add the cooked Little Millet Rice and mix thoroughly. Make sure that there are no lumps. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve with coconut chutney.
